The
National Parks of Zambia
Zambia has 19 National Parks covering an area of nearly
60,000 sqkm, or about 9 per cent of the country, they
constitute one of the largest conservation areas in Africa.
The best known are the South and North Luangwa National
Parks, Lower Zambezi National Park and Kafue National Park,
however, many of the smaller parks such as Lochinvar and the
Bangweulu Swamps offer the chance to see rarities not found
in the bigger parks.
Most of the parks contain the main large mammal species
of Southern Africa, with South Luangwa being reknowned as
the best park in Africa for Leopard.
In addition to the wonderfull opportunities to view
mammals, around 750 species of birds can be found in Zambia,
with Lochinvar and Banweulu being of great interest to the
ornithologist.
Many camps within the National Parks of Zambia offer both
early morning and sundown game drives. One of the most
thrilling way to see the wildlife and to learn about the
fauna and flora of the area is to take one of Zambia's
specialities, the walking safari. These are organised by
many of the camps who provide an expert on the local area
and an armed game scout.
